PRIVATE CHARTER YACHT – M/V EQUINOX

M/V Equinox is a fully equipped and professionally-crewed private charter yacht. With a home port in beautiful Sitka, Alaska, the opportunities to explore vast coastal waters, abundant wildlife and 17 million acres of National Forest are unparalleled. Your private cruise aboard Equinox is made to be one of adventure, removal from distraction, and the ultimate in experiencing Alaska the way it should be.

We do not offer canned trips - each day boasts custom-built itineraries that ensure you make the most of your time with us. In addition to salt and freshwater fishing, we offer experiences that aim to bring our guests closer to nature. From hiking through in an untouched wilderness, to exploring secluded beaches, to kayaking among the many islands and estuaries, we are eager to share a unique and authentic Alaskan voyage with you.

THE BOAT

Equinox is a 53’ fiberglass motor yacht originally built by Bigelow Boat Company. She cruises comfortably at 8 knots and has a range of roughly 2,000 nautical miles. The vessel has a three stateroom, two head layout with a roomy salon, pilot house, and top deck that are ideal for sipping an early morning coffee or mid afternoon drink while watching the scenery pass you by.

Equipped with a skiff, pot hauler, kayaks, paddleboards, crab pots, shrimp pots, a commercial grade vacuum packer, deep freezer, down riggers, and enough fishing gear to last several lifetimes, we are ready to find it, see it, experience it, catch it, clean it, and send it home with you.

Our 23’ excursion vessel, Ecliptic, accompanies the Equinox and allows quick access to more inaccessible places. Outfitted for fishing, crabbing, shrimping, and sightseeing it’s a unique bonus to your private cruise.

THE EXPERIENCE

We want to provide an adventure that is uniquely "you." Using our vessel as a platform, we provide guests with amazing experiences that are customized to suit all levels and interests. From exploring tidepools and beachcombing, to ocean kayaking and paddle boarding, opportunities abound to pack in as much (or as little) as you’d like. Want to hike to a secluded beach? No problem. Want to try snorkeling in our pristine waters? Let’s do it. Up for some wildlife viewing? Us too. The truth is, we’re up for just about anything and we’ve got the gear to make it happen!

We want you to experience the best of Alaska, and to that end we outfit our trips with plenty of outdoor gear. This is by no means an exhaustive list, but many of our trips include a custom combination of these adventures:

  • Saltwater fishing for salmon, halibut, rockfish, lingcod and black cod
  • Wildlife viewing of whales, sea lions, sea otters and seabirds
  • Kayaking, paddle boarding, and snorkeling
  • Crab and shrimp fishing
  • Freshwater fly and spin fishing for steelhead, salmon and trout
  • Wildlife viewing of bears, deer, eagles, land otters, mink and more
  • Hiking/Exploring
  • Beachcombing
  • Bonfires
  • Intertidal explorations

FISHING

Fishing is the flagship experience at Equinox. With our extensive and diverse fishing experience in Southeast Alaska, we have the know-how to get you hooked up. Whether on the fly, a spinning rod or saltwater gear, you’ll enjoy some of the finest fishing that Southeast Alaska has to offer. While year round fishing is possible, our most enjoyable and productive months are April through October.

Fish on the Ocean

Sitka is on the outer coast and is known to have some of the best King Salmon catch rates in the region. In addition to King Salmon, our guests also target Coho (Silver) Salmon, Sockeye Salmon, Halibut, Rockfish, Sablefish and Ling Cod. While run timing is somewhat dependent on environmental factors like weather, temperature and prey abundance, here are some general guidelines to give you an idea of when specific species are typically targeted:

King Salmon - the largest of the salmon species are most abundant in May, June, and July.

Coho Salmon - the smaller, but more acrobatic, cousin to the King start transecting the waters around Baranof Island from mid-July to October.

Sockeye Salmon - the distinctive “red” salmon is a favorite subsistence fish among Alaskans. While less common in Sitka than King and Coho, they can be seen in small numbers throughout Southeast Alaska from June to August.

Halibut, Rockfish, Sablefish and Ling Cod - these “local” fish aren’t considered seasonal as they live year round in the waters around Sitka and Southeast Alaska. These species can be caught from April to October.

Fish on the River

Unlike river systems in the interior of Alaska, those in Southeast, Alaska have carved their way through granite mountains. The systems are generally shorter and narrower, but each bend offers a new perspective and a new hole to be tested. If you’re looking for a freshwater fishing adventure, here are some general guidelines on timing to help you plan your getaway:

Steelhead - an ocean run Rainbow Trout can be found in several Baranof Island rivers in April and May. These fish are large and powerful - and for the Steely lover, this time of year makes for an excellent early season trip.

Trout - our local trout populations start to wake up in May and become really active around mid-June. You can catch Rainbow Trout, Dolly Varden and Cut Throat Trout.

Salmon - several rivers on Baranof Island are the spawning grounds for targeted salmon species. Kings start to run up rivers in July and make for an incredibly fun catch on light tackle. Cohos are seen in-river beginning in late August and running through October. Pink Salmon are incredibly abundant in most local rivers from July through August.

You are welcome to bring your own fishing gear, but we are fully outfitted to catch any fish that swims in these waters. Equinox has a literal boat load of tried and true fresh and saltwater tackle as well as crab and shrimp pots.

A NOTE FROM THE CREW

A private charter with Equinox means you have locals on your side. We love our slice of Alaska and we’re eager to introduce you to the place we call home. Equinox is owned and operated by Cameo and Brooks - a fun-loving pair with loads of fishing, outdoor exploration and all around adventuring experience in this great state. We spend summers with awesome people like you and winters are spent on boat projects and traveling. When you’re with us you will experience the Alaska that is enjoyed by locals, but elusive to visitors.

We are Alaskans with real Alaskan experience. Give us some of your well-earned time and we’ll treat you to food inspired by and sourced from the land and ocean, epic adventures, breathtaking vistas and the time and space to take it all in.

Equinox is an all-inclusive, Alaskan experience. We want you to focus on having the adventure of a lifetime, not worrying about what you need to bring on board - so we take care of everything. Our daily rate includes all meals, drinks, excursions and all around good vibes for our guests. You’re going to have a great time. Trust us.

We recommend a minimum stay of 5 days/5 nights. Southeast Alaska is vast and some of the best experiences can be found in the most remote areas. We want you to have adequate time to stay and play in the areas we will be traveling.

In our experience, 5 days is just the right amount of time to fit it all in - you can fish on the ocean and in the streams, spend time whale watching, meander through prehistoric forests, hike into the alpine and treat yourself to meals crafted with local seafood and other edibles like berries and wild mushrooms.

Shorter or longer stays can be accommodated depending on our schedule. Please contact us to talk about how we can create your perfect Alaskan adventure.
